On October 20th, the opening ceremony of the 2023 Tianfu(Chengdu) Hibiscus Festival, along with the 40th-anniversary celebration of Chengdu's City Flower designation, unfolded at the Tianfu(Chengdu) Hibiscus Garden. The hibiscus, which has carried the historical legacy of Chengdu, a millennium-old city, has also painted the city in a timeless palette of romantic pinks and whites.
This year's Hibiscus Festival is set to last for a month, running from October 20th to November 19th. It covers an extensive flower-viewing area spanning 120,000 square meters, featuring a breathtaking display of 450,000 fresh flower pots spread across 40 designated flower-viewing spots throughout the city.
Apart from the main venue, the Tianfu(Chengdu) Hibiscus Garden, residents can also revel in the beauty of hibiscus flowers at various locations across the city, including the Chengdu Botanical Garden, Shengdeng Park, Cultural Park, Jinsha Riverside Park, and at key points along the city's greenways and urban landscapes.
At the event, representatives from three generations, encompassing the elderly, middle-aged, and youth over a span of 40 years, graced the stage. Together, they presented a poignant recitation titled "Hibiscus: Honor and Dreams," marking the 40th anniversary of the official designation of the hibiscus as Chengdu's city flower. This recitation also served as the grand opening for the 2024 Chengdu International Horticultural Expo.
During the inaugural ceremony, the "hibiscus flower" was formally declared as the official theme flower for the 2024 Chengdu International Horticultural Expo. This globally acclaimed horticultural exhibition, authorized by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), is often hailed as the "Olympics of the horticultural world." It holds a pivotal role in propelling the advancement of the horticultural industry and in promoting the development of ecological civilization.
